Rome wasn't built in a day
Featuring Cam Ward, Rome Odunze, and more.
Yooo!
Scheduling this email on Tuesday night before I head to Tampa for my bachelor party. Might make an unscheduled pop-in on Emeka Egbuka while I’m down there to make sure he’s sticking to his offseason training program that I assigned to him as part of the Mocha Joe’s dynasty roster. Gotta hold everyone accountable as we go for 3 titles in 4 years.

As we continue to work on the new site, we have reduced the newsletter cadence to 1x per week for the early part of the offseason.
We’ll increase the newsletter cadence again later in the offseason.
Last week, I asked you all: “When are most of your rookie drafts?”
52.2% of you said “May”

Best subscriber comments:
May: “Some of my drafts are half May and half August, but that will change to all May in 2027”
Our take: Most of my rookie drafts are in August. All comes down to collective league patience, I guess. In some leagues, people are making moves all offseason. In others, I don’t hear from guys for 7 months. I enjoy having a mix of both.
Alright, now let’s get to some news you might’ve missed this week.
Giddy up.

The ops hire that onboards in 30 seconds.
Viktor is an AI coworker that lives in Slack, right where your team already works.
Message Viktor like a teammate: "pull last quarter's revenue by channel," or "build a dashboard for our board meeting."
Viktor connects to your tools, does the work, and delivers the actual report, spreadsheet, or dashboard. Not a summary. The real thing.
There’s no new software to adopt and no one to train.
Most teams start with one task. Within a week, Viktor is handling half of their ops.

Jalen Hurts is reportedly embracing a shift toward an under-center, play-action-heavy offensive scheme for the 2026 season.
Hurts is transitioning to a new offensive scheme under Sean Mannion that emphasizes under-center formations and play-action passing, moving away from his previous shotgun-heavy RPO system. Reports indicate he is highly receptive to these structural changes, which aim to improve his rhythm, footwork, and efficiency in the middle of the field (9 sources).
His fantasy value remains supported by an elite rushing floor, though his rushing production saw a decline last season with 421 yards and eight touchdowns (8 sources).
Hurts faces significant pressure in 2026 as he works with his fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons. Analysts remain divided on his long-term ceiling, with some citing his historical ability to adapt to new systems as a positive indicator, while others highlight his career-long tendency to avoid throwing over the middle of the field as a potential limitation (8 sources).
Our take: Hurts has one of the most divided sentiment profiles you’ll find. In the past 4, he’s been QB3, QB2, QB8, QB8 (even with the yearly OC changes). History tells us he’ll figure it out again this year and be a top-10 QB.
Projections for the 2026 season estimate a target volume of approximately 85 targets, representing one of the highest marks of his career despite ongoing concerns regarding his limited role in two-receiver sets.
Reed signed a contract extension effectively functioning as a two-year, $27.1 million deal with $20 million guaranteed, signaling his status as a foundational piece of the team's long-term offensive core (6 sources).
He serves as the primary slot weapon and zone-beater, maintaining a consistent 74-76% slot usage rate and a 20% target rate when active, though he has historically been limited to 11-personnel sets (3 sources).
The team is actively transitioning his role away from gadget-heavy usage toward traditional vertical route running to improve his efficiency as a downfield threat, where he averaged 2.2 yards per route run in 2025 (3 sources).
Our take: Doubs and Wicks are gone. You would think that should open up more opportunities for Reed. If the increased vertical route usage is for real, we could see his best season yet.
Reports confirm that the Vikings are conducting a legitimate "50-50" quarterback competition between McCarthy and Kyler Murray, with the coaching staff willing to start the player who outplays the other during camp.
His development remains a significant concern after a 2025 season marked by inconsistent performance, struggles against heavy pass rushes, and recurring injuries that limited him to 10 appearances over 35 games (5 sources).
Despite his struggles, McCarthy maintains strong locker room support and showed statistical improvement during his final five games of the previous season, ranking in the top-10 in passer rating and top-5 in EPA during that stretch (3 sources).
Dynasty managers are advised to hold McCarthy, as his value is currently depressed at a QB33 startup ADP, though he remains a high-risk asset whose long-term outlook depends on his ability to secure the starting role (5 sources).
Our take: That negative sentiment chart pretty much sums up how I feel about JJ. I can squint and see why there might be some positive signs for his development, but I just don’t see how Kyler isn’t starting week 1. The “50-50” competition feels like political coachspeak.
Cam Ward is positioned for a sophomore breakout as he continues to master Brian Daboll's new offensive system.
Cam Ward is entering a pivotal second season with a revamped offensive infrastructure, including the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and significant upgrades to the receiving corps featuring Carnell Tate and Wan'Dale Robinson (7 sources).
Analysts view Ward as a high-upside dynasty asset, citing his mobility and arm talent as traits that separate him from traditional pocket passers, though he must improve his efficiency and reduce his 14-turnover rookie rate (5 sources).
His rookie performance was hampered by the league's most difficult schedule, poor offensive line play, and a lack of receiver separation, but he showed tangible growth in the final month of the season (5 sources).
Our take: Was never really a big Cam Ward fan going into last year, so this sentiment chart surprised me. I didn’t know he had the most difficult schedule last year either. There have been a lot of improvements around him this offseason, and I’m starting to think I should give him a 2nd look.
Rome Odunze is positioned for a significant third-year breakout as a primary target in the Bears' offense.
His 2025 production was significantly hampered by a foot stress fracture that limited him to 12 games, though his early-season performance established a high-level baseline for his technical proficiency and target share (8 sources).
During phase two of the offseason program, Odunze has displayed notable speed and improved timing with his quarterback, signaling a strong start to his integration into the team's offensive scheme (2 sources).
While he faces target competition from teammate Luther Burden, analysts view them as a co-WR1 duo, with Odunze currently representing a value discount in dynasty formats at his WR20-28 ADP (5 sources).
Our take: I drafted Odunze in a startup last year for $9. I thought I had struck gold after those first games (15.7, 31.8, 15.2, 16.9). The rest of the year was ROUGH. But I’m willing to write it off to the foot injury and give him another shot. I want at least one of Burden, Loveland, or Odunze everywhere.
