Detroit placed Isiah Pacheco on injured reserve, leaving Jacob Saylors as the backup behind Jahmyr Gibbs.

The Lions announced Tuesday that Pacheco had been placed on injured reserve, which rules him out for at least the first four games and makes him first eligible to return in Week 5 against Arizona. Pacheco dealt with a knee injury during training camp, but Dan Campbell said late in camp that the knee was no longer the concern and that a back injury was, describing it as "a little touch and go right now." One report said the team still expects him to play this year while not providing any sort of timeline. Saylors, a 2023 undrafted free agent out of East Tennessee State, closed the preseason with 100 yards on 17 carries in Detroit's finale, and two shows relayed Campbell saying the team is comfortable with him as the RB2. Analysts split on what that is worth: some project him as the primary backup heading into Week 1 but a very deep league consideration only, since he would likely split touches if Gibbs missed time and Detroit also kept Sione Vaki and Jabari Small on the roster, while one podcast argued a 195-pound undrafted back has "no chance" of actually being the RB2 going into the year.

Our take: This tells me the Pacheco injury probably isn’t too serious if they feel good about Saylors as their RB2. But whether Pacheco is healthy or not, Gibbs might break fantasy this year. Easy RB schedule. No competition. What else is there to say? Saylors is worth the dart throw just in case something happened to Gibbs.

Ja'Kobi Lane has moved ahead of Devontez Walker for Baltimore's third receiver job.

Lane entered training camp competing with Walker for the third receiver spot that opened when Baltimore did not re-sign DeAndre Hopkins. In one preseason game both started, but Lane's day ended early in the second quarter while Walker played into the third quarter, which one analytics site called pretty strong evidence Lane was ahead on the depth chart. Lane then sat out the Ravens' final preseason game and now appears locked in as the No. 3 behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. Analysts at several outlets described him as one of Baltimore's standouts of camp, with one relaying a report that the person had never seen a player have the kind of training camp Lane had, though that show noted the comment was made on August 8 and it did not know whether he had kept it up. Analysts on a Ravens podcast said Bateman, Lane and Walker are effectively rotating through the WR2 role rather than any one of them owning it, and several noted that Bateman's unresolved off-field situation could put Lane in that second receiver role as soon as Week 1, while being explicit that no suspension has been confirmed.

Our take: Lane is a perfect double-digit round bench stash. There’s a world where he plays his way into being the #2 receiving option on a great offense. Those guys don’t grow on trees late in the draft or on waivers.

Alec Pierce returned to practice from the PUP list, but Week 1 is still being framed as a goal rather than a certainty.

Pierce underwent surgery on his left ankle in March, after a platelet-rich plasma injection in January failed to relieve pain he had been playing through, and he had another injection on that ankle in August. He missed all of training camp and was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Thursday. Asked whether he would be ready for Week 1, he said that was the goal, and one fantasy show put him at 50-50, noting he was out there running routes but not yet in team drills. Chris Ballard said he did not know yet when Pierce would be fully going again, but that he was in a really good place and progressing well. Analysts diverge from there: some project him to open the season in two-receiver sets and take on a larger role as the primary field stretcher now that Michael Pittman Jr. has been traded to Pittsburgh, while others flag that his conditioning will not be at NFL level to start, and one said he did not think Pierce's legs were the same size right now, which he took as a sign Pierce is behind.

Our take: If I had Pierce, I’d be benching him until further notice. I want to see the downfield explosion with my own eyes before I’d be comfortable starting him again.
